As the successor to the previously released OPPO A31, the OPPO A54 comes with several improvements in various sectors that make it attractive.
OPPO A54 comes with a large capacity battery plus fast battery charging support. This cellphone also carries multi-camera support with various functions to enable its users to be creative in producing photos.
Meanwhile, the OPPO A54 offers a contemporary full screen plus a punch hole on the top left. With the features offered and a price that reaches ksh 23,500, will this phone be able to compete with other middle segment products in the country?
On the front, we are faced with a 6.51-inch screen with HD + resolution (1600 x 720 pixels) and LCD technology that can display content properly. The body-to-screen ratio reaches 89.2% so I can freely watch videos and play games on this cellphone.
The punch hole on the top left of the screen houses the front camera which can be used for selfies as well as the Face Unlock feature. While the fingerprint sensor is on the right, precisely on the power button.
OPPO A54 allows up to five different fingerprints to be registered on the sensor, making it easier for me to unlock the screen when one of my fingers is dirty. While the Face Unlock feature can recognize my face even in light or dark conditions.
On the left side of the phone, there is a volume button, SIM card slot, and microSD. While at the bottom there is a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and speaker holes.
The rear body of this cellphone uses a polycarbonate material which is designed to resemble glass. To make the body look attractive, OPPO also presents two color choices consisting of Starry Blue and Crystal Black.
Still on the back, there are three cameras and AI writing arranged in a 2 x 2 matrix in a box. Right below the camera is an elongated LED Flash and the words Triple Camera.
The three rear cameras of the OPPO A54 consist of a 13 MP main camera, 2 MP macro, and 2 MP depth. The combination of the main and depth cameras can be used to produce photos with a bokeh effect (blurry background) instantly.
Meanwhile, the macro camera can be used to target objects at close range with details that are still visible. In the default camera application, there is a Dazzle Color feature that can make the colors in the resulting photo clear and bright so that it can attract the attention of those who see it.
However, OPPO needs to improve its night photography capabilities in the Auto Mode feature that is present in the default camera application. To make night photos better, the Ultra Night Mode feature is also available.
Turning to the front, there is a 16 MP camera that can produce selfie photos well in sufficient light conditions or during the day. When using Portrait mode, I can produce selfies with a bokeh effect (blurry background) plus a smooth face.
The front camera is not equipped with the Ultra Night Mode feature so I can only take advantage of Auto Mode or use Flash. Selfie photos using Flash at night can be said to be quite helpful to make your face brighter.
Armed with the MediaTek Helio P35 (12nm) Octa-Core chipset and 4GB RAM, this phone is adequate to handle several applications for daily activities such as telephone, SMS, playing music, chatting, social networking, browsing, or playing videos.
Moreover, the internal storage offered by this cellphone has a capacity of 128 GB so that it can accommodate many applications, games, and files at once. There is also support for a microSD slot of up to 256 GB which can be used to expand its storage capacity.
Although the MediaTek Helio P35 Octa-Core is not intended for playing heavy games, it is capable of running popular games like Free Fire and Arena of Valor smoothly with high graphics settings.
OPPO A54 was able to get a score of 105,903 points on the AnTuTu Benchmark V9.0.3-OB test. Whereas in testing using Geekbench 5.4.0, this cellphone managed to get a score of 167 points for Single-Core and 978 Multi-Core.
When viewed from the overall performance test, OPPO A54 is still able to compete with other cellphones in the same price range.
Relying on a 5,000mAh capacity battery, OPPO claims that this cellphone can last a long time in normal use. For this reason, I immediately tested it by running the PCMark for Android application.
OPPO A54 is equipped with ColorOS 7.2 based on Android 10 which already has a simple appearance and attractive features such as Dark Mode, App Cloner, Split Screen, three-finger screenshot, and others.
Split Screen can make two applications run on one screen at once, for example watching videos on YouTube as well as chatting on WhatsApp. Furthermore, I can also take screenshots by simply swiping the screen from top to bottom using three fingers.
Overall, OPPO A54 can support daily activities with a fairly long battery life. The performance can still be relied on to run various applications in daily routines.
OPPO A54 is also equipped with a fingerprint sensor and Face Unlock which is able to responsively unlock the screen quickly. Equipped with an IPX4 certificate, OPPO A54 is able to withstand bursts of water from various directions, such as rainwater or splashes from fresh water.
With the features and hardware specifications offered, OPPO A54 is still able to compete with cellphones in the price range of ksh 20,000 – 25,000. Moreover, this cellphone can support routines well.
